Jurgen Klopp has named Liverpool hero Steven Gerrard as the one player he’d most like to have worked with.
Gerrard became a Liverpool legend during his time on Merseyside having joined the club’s academy when he was nine years old.
He led the club to Champions League glory in 2005 while also winning the Uefa Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups, one Community Shield and two Uefa Super Cups.
Widely considered one of the best midfielders of his generation, Gerrard remained at Liverpool until 2015 before retiring a year later after one season with LA Galaxy.
Klopp arrived at Liverpool the season after Gerrard left meaning the former captain never got to work under the German.
But for Klopp, it’s an opportunity he wish he’d had with the former Borussia Dortmund boss a huge fan his talent.
‘That’s easy. It’s Stevie,’ Klopp told This Is Anfield when asked for one player from the history of football, any period prior to his management, he’d most like to have coached.
‘When we played in Sydney three or four years ago and after the season we didn’t have a proper team and we invited [Steve] McManaman, [Daniel] Agger, Jamie Carragher and Stevie.
‘To be honest, I knew Liverpool and I saw him playing, of course, but a little bit advanced age group wise but they were all really good.
‘But Stevie, what a player he still was then! I think he was already retired but maybe a youth coach here. Incredible.
‘Stevie and me together in the roles, he as the man on the pitch and me as a coach that would have been nice. So it’s Stevie.
‘Six years ago it would have been a different answer but now I’m here and I know him as a person and as a player so that’s now an easy answer.’
Gerrard is now manager of Rangers, who sit top of the Scottish Premiership as they look to defend their title.
Liverpool, meanwhile, sit second in the Premier League, one point behind leaders Chelsea.
