Jimmy Carr has given his son a very unique name – being inspired by a billionaire philanthropist and comedian Chris Rock.
The 8 Out Of 10 Cats host has confirmed that he and his partner Karoline Copping called their son Rockefeller Carr, almost two years after they welcomed him into the world.
Jimmy, 49, told the Radio Times that the toddler is named after John D Rockefeller, the Standard Oil magnate, richest person in modern history and wealthiest American of all time, although added: ’Also with a hint of Chris Rock, the greatest ever comedian.’
That’s some combination.
Jimmy and Channel 5 commissioning editor Karoline, who have been together for 20 years, are believed to have welcomed Rockefeller in late 2019, and while the comedian never spoke about becoming a dad in interviews, his fatherhood was pretty much confirmed when he was pictured pushing a pram.
He said: ‘[The paparazzi] took plenty of photos of me pushing a pram. Or maybe they thought I was taking old CDs down to the dump in it because I’d fallen on hard times…’
Speaking about being a dad for the first time, Jimmy joked that so far, he hasn’t been softened by his son, saying: ‘It could be a bit of a gear shift, because of the kind of comedy I do. But so far, I’m still telling the same jokes, I’ve got the same sense of humour.
‘We’ll see, because I’m sure I’m going to be writing a lot of material about him. In fact, I think he might be tax-deductible.’
Jimmy seemed to confirm his baby news last month during a gig in Brixton, south London, when he said: ‘I had to tell my little boy he’s adopted.
‘I mean he isn’t, but the look on his face. I said, “No, no, no you were adopted, the new family is picking you up tomorrow.’
While being a dad hasn’t changed Jimmy’s style, it has made him reflect on his life, having written a part memoir, part self-help book over lockdown.
The Big Fat Quiz host said: ‘I’m in my late 40s, and I view this as half-time in my life. We’ve cut up the oranges and we’re looking at how we’ve done in the first half.
‘I feel we all have a moral duty – and, if a publisher gives you an advance, a contractual obligation – to reflect on your life, especially as I’ve recently become a father for the first time.’
In Before & Laughter, Jimmy doles out pearls of wisdom he’s picked up throughout his life, while dealing with depression and anxiety in his 20s when he worked in marketing, and coping with his mother’s death.
The book also features plenty of A-list anecdotes, including the time Jimmy introduced Hugh Grant to Monica Lewinsky at a house party, and a whole chapter is dedicated to the scandal surrounding Jimmy’s participation in a tax avoidance scheme.
