Whenever a soap pulls out a stunt, it is always exciting and thrilling for viewers – but to make it worth it, the aftermath has to be just as important.

Emmerdale boss Kate Brooks has assured us that the plans for beyond the huge week ahead – which will see at least one villager die – are intricate and wide, with life changing consequences for many villagers.

She told Metro.co.uk: ‘It is very safe to say there will be a lot of repercussions, what happens will impact some of our well loved characters. This is just the start of something that will change lives forever.

‘It’s big exciting and explosive but these weeks fall short if they don’t give us bigger stories coming out. There are a lot of new directions

‘It was imperative to root it in character driven stories as much as the stunts and visuals. Some characters get a happy ever after, others aren’t so lucky…’

Discussing the decision to kill off a character, Kate continued: ‘We don’t take the decisions lightly and we know when you introduce a character with a thirst for murder, not everyone will survive.

‘We base the decisions primarily on what creates the best story going forward. We wanted to make sure every kill has impact and changes people and the outcome isn’t always what we expect or indeed hope. It’s hard to gauge the right characters, it’s very story and character led.’

And the week didn’t come without its hiccups – which of course is natural when a project is on this kind of scale.

Kate added: ‘It was quite a challenge, one of our locations fell through, it wasn’t ideal but our team is very adept at getting back on our feet. We wanted to capitalise and utilise the countryside – the locations are a feast for the eyes.

‘It’s been an astonishing feat to ensure filming was as safe as possible. It’s not just about ambition but meticulous planning – every brilliant member of the team has gone above and beyond
