Arsenal new boy Takehiro Tomiyasu has promised Arsenal supporters he will ‘give everything to contribute for the team’ after completing a deadline day switch from Bologna.

The Gunners agreed to pay an initial fee of around £17million for Tomiyasu after stepping up their move for the defender’s signature in the final few hours of the summer transfer window.

Mikel Arteta had been determined to strengthen at the back – with Arsenal shipping nine goals in a disastrous start to the Premier League campaign – and Tomiyasu arrives in north London as a versatile option given he can cover both centre-half and right-back.

It was a frantic few hours from Arsenal’s perspective, with Hector Bellerin, Reiss Nelson and Alex Runarsson all securing on loan moves before Tomiyasu was unveiled.

The Japan international becomes Arsenal’s sixth new arrival of a busy window, following Ben White, Nuno Tavares, Martin Odegaard, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Aaron Ramsdale through the doors at the Emirates.

‘Hi, Arsenal supporters! I’m so happy to be part of the team,’

Tomiyasu said in a short video posted on Arsenal’s social media pages.

‘I promise you that I will give everything to contribute for the team.

‘I’m looking forward to seeing you in the stadium.’

Arsenal confirmed that

Tomiyasu will take over the No.18 shirt this season which had been worn by Thomas Partey. However, the number has been vacant, with the Ghana midfielder recently switching to his favoured No.5.

The No.18 jersey was worn by Mikael Silvestre, Sebastien Squillaci and Nacho Monreal before Partey’s arrival from Atletico Madrid.

Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Arteta said the club had brought in a defender with ‘

high technical ability and composure on the ball’ with the addition of Tomiyasu.

‘Takehiro is a strong defender with good experience in Serie A and at international level,’ the Spaniard said.

‘He’s a versatile defender with great defensive qualities, high technical ability and composure on the ball. He will be an important member of our squad.

‘We look forward to Takehiro joining up with us when he returns from international duty.’

Arsenal technical director Edu added: ‘We’re delighted to have signed Takehiro.

‘We’ve been watching him for a while now and we’re pleased that we have reached an agreement with Bologna. He is an important addition to our squad.’
