A man riding in a New York City subway train allegedly choked a woman until she became unconscious and then tried to rape her. The man approached the 40-year-old woman on Tuesday night and demanded money, according to police.

The suspect choked the woman as the train headed north and neared the final stop at 168th Street in the Washington Heights neighborhood around 9.45pm, The New York Post reported. Initially, the man demanded money from the woman.

He eventually slammed her onto the car seats and strangled her into unconsciousness, police said. The man then reached inside the victim’s bra and tried to rape her, authorities said.

The train pulled into a station, at which point the suspect bolted out of the train onto the platform, dragging the woman out before abandoning her and making his escape.

Surveillance footage shows the man briefly without his mask before he promptly pulled it up.

Emergency responders was called, The New York Daily News reported. The woman did not suffer serious injuries physically, officials said.

The suspect remained at large as of Thursday morning.

New York City, like many other American metropolitan areas, is dealing with a surge in crime.

According to the New York Police Department’s statistical crime index, June 2021 had 131 reported instances of rape, a 10% increase from June 2020.

The total number of reported rapes in June 2021 surpassed June 2020 year-to-date by about 5%, the report shows.

In April 2021, there were 31 more reported rapes than in April 2020, an increase of 52%.

Just north of Washington Heights where the incident occurred, in the Bronx’s 231st Street station, another person was hurt in a random attack the following day, CW 11 reported.

The victim, an elderly man, potentially had his leg broken and was hospitalized, police said. The suspect fled the station in an unknown direction.
