Rockets fired at Kabul airport have been intercepted by a missile defence system, a US official has said.

There are no reports of any US casualties so far, but this information could change, according to the source.

They said the rockets were likely launched by ISIS-K, but admitted it’s too early to know for sure.

People fled after the sound of three explosions before a flash in the sky, a witness said.

They said the strike happened on Monday morning in Kabul’s Salim Karwan neighbourhood.

In Washington, the White House issued a statement saying officials briefed President Joe Biden on ‘the rocket attack at Hamid Karzai International Airport’ (HKIA).

The statement said: ‘The president was informed that operations continue uninterrupted at HKIA, and has reconfirmed his order that commanders redouble their efforts to prioritise doing whatever is necessary to protect our forces on the ground.’
