Movie fans were treated to a 13-minute preview of Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick at CinemaCon on Thursday.

The Hollywood heavyweight, 59, appeared on the big screen at Caesars’ Colosseum Theatre in Las Vegas to tease the upcoming November release of the film.

In the clip, Tom’s character Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell was informed the Top Gun programme was coming to an end, prompting him to go against the orders of the Admiral (Ed Harris) and fly the Mach 10 jet out of the desert, according to Deadline.

The publication states that the pilot asked Maverick: ‘You know what happens if you go through with this?’ to which he responded: ‘I know what happens to everyone else if I don’t.’

The plucky pilot told him: ‘Alright, sweetheart, one last ride.’

‘He’s the fastest man alive,’ the control tower technician could be heard saying as Maverick sped off.

As it looked like the engine would explode as he approached, he pushed through – prompting the control room to break out into cheers.

Top Gun: Maverick is the long-awaited sequel set to be released by Paramount Pictures but it has been subjected to multiple delays.

The blockbuster was originally scheduled for release on July 12, 2019, before it was delayed to June 26, 2020.

After even more push backs, it is now set for release in November this year.

The movie is set to be full of gravity-defying stunts, with a bird’s eye view of one of Maverick’s flights airing during the Super Bowl last year.

In addition to Tom and Ed, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, Manny Jacinto and Glen Powell will all appear on screen.

The movie’s director Jospeh Kosinski previously spoke of Maverick’s return after 35 years, with the first film being released in 1986.

On the return of Val Kilmer, who plays Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, he told Entertainment Weekly: ‘The rivalry and relationship between Iceman and Maverick is one of those things that makes that first film so iconic.

‘It’s a relationship that is important to the Top Gun franchise and as a fan I would want to see how it’s evolved.’

Top Gun: Maverick is set for release on November 19.
