Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised Mason Greenwood’s development and says the Manchester United and England forward has ‘turned into a man’ over the summer.
The 19-year-old scored his 30th goal for the Red Devils in Saturday’s impressive 5-1 thumping over Leeds United on the weekend of the Premier League.
Greenwood has already made more than 100 first-team appearances, having made his debut in the Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.
The United academy graduate was named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for Euro 2020 but an injury ruled him out of the tournament.
Missing the Euros was naturally a blow for Greenwood but Solskjaer believes he has benefitted from a summer off and has ‘turned into a man’ during the off-season.
‘I think you can see the benefit in his… I think you can see how much work he has put down this pre-season in his summer,’ Solskjaer said.
‘He’s turned into a man. He’s filling out, he’s stronger. His stride is stronger – you know, when he ran away from the defender and scored his goal, it was a joy to see.’
Asked if Greenwood thrives on the responsibility of being one of Manchester United’s key forwards, Solskjaer said: ‘I don’t know. He just loves playing football wherever he is on the pitch.
‘He’s so clean on the ball, strong. I think he enjoyed taking corners. When you’ve got kids who just play with courage, no fear whatsoever. It doesn’t really matter where he’s at.
‘But he’s more than capable now of using his body, as I said. He’s filled out so much more. He could play through the middle dealing with bigger centre-backs.’
