Kanye West appears to have filed papers to legally change his name to ‘Ye’.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, the 44-year-old rapper has petitioned the LA courts to change from his present name, Kanye Omari West, to simply ‘Ye’.
An established nickname the Flashing Lights singer has gone by for years, Kanye also used the moniker as the name for his eighth album, released in June 2018.
In September 2018, he appeared to suggest he intended to embrace the shortened name, writing in a tweet ahead of his hosting gig on Saturday Night Live: ‘The being formally known as Kanye West. I am YE.’
Now it seems he has taken formal steps to make that name change a reality.
The rapper has previously shown pride in his West family roots, often having referred to himself as Mr West in both song and person.
His stalled upcoming album, Donda, is named after his mother, Donda West, who died at the age of 58 in 2007 from complications after cosmetic surgery.
Kanye is busy holding a series of listening parties for the new album, with a third one set to take place at Chicago’s Soldier Field stadium on August 26, although a formal release date is still yet to be confirmed.
The star even moved into sparse accommodation at the Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta, Georgia earlier this summer to complete work on the record, which was initially set for a July 2020 release.
In preparation for Donda, the All Of The Lights star wiped his Instagram this week before posting a photo of his childhood home.
He has since uploaded further cryptic photos, all without comment, as fans clamour in his comments, desperate for news of the album’s official drop.
Both his Twitter and Instagram profile names display as ‘Ye’, although the rapper hasn’t tweeted since November 2020, when he ran for US President.
Yeezy is also currently engaged in beef with Drake, after the rapper appeared to respond to Drake’s latest diss track with a group message that promised ‘you will never recover’ and a now-deleted Google Maps screenshot with Drake’s home address in Toronto, Canada.
But the Canadian, who ignited the spat in February by inferring he had slept with Kanye’s ex-wife Kim Kardashian after rapping about a woman named Kiki, Kim’s Kardashian family nickname, seemed unbothered by Kanye’s dox as he shared clips of himself on Instagram Stories, happily driving around Toronto.
