Food at three west London supermarkets is suspected to have been contaminated after being ‘injected with needles.’
Anyone who bought an item from Tesco Express, Little Waitrose or Sainsbury’s Local on Fulham Palace Road yesterday evening is being told to throw it away.
The supermarkets were placed on lockdown after the incident last night and one man has been arrested on suspicion of trying to cause public harm or anxiety.
Hammersmith and Fulham Council issued a rare ’emergency alert’ on its social media pages, warning people of the possible risk their food has been contaminated.
It is thought the products injected with the mystery substance included processed meat and microwaveable meals.
It is currently unknown how many items have been contaminated, or with what.
The council said officers were called at just before 8pm after a man was reported to be shouting abuse at people in the street.
A statement added: ‘Members of the public are advised as a precaution to dispose of any food items bought from these supermarkets this evening.
‘H&F Council’s Environmental Health team are now working with the supermarket branches affected.’
Metropolitan Police later said in a statement the man was alleged to have ‘injected foodstuffs with a number of needles’ at the Tesco Express at 168-188 Fulham Palace Road, the Little Waitrose at 201-207 Fulham Palace Road, and the Sainsbury’s Local at 179-183 Fulham Palace Road.
