DaBaby has deleted his apology for making homophobic remarks at the Rolling Loud festival, a week after posting it.
The 29-year-old sparked outrage with remarks made on stage during his set on July 25, with the Rockstar rapper saying: ‘If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, put your cellphone light up. Ladies, if your p***y smell like water, put a cellphone light up. Fellas, if you ain’t sucking d*** in the parking lot, put your cellphone lights in the air.’
A week on, a statement was posted to DaBaby’s Instagram account, admitting he’d been ‘misinformed’, but fans have now noticed that the post has been deleted from Instagram.
The statement had read: ‘Social Media moves so fast that people want to demolish you before you even have the opportunity to grow, educate, and learn from your mistakes.
‘As a man who has had to make his own way from very difficult circumstances, having people I know publicly working against me — knowing that what I needed was education on these topics and guidance — has been challenging.
‘I appreciate the many people who came to me with kindness, who reached out to me privately to offer wisdom, education, and resources. That’s what I needed and it was received.
I want to apologise to the LGBTQ+ community for the hurtful and triggering comments I made. Again, I apologise for my misinformed comments about HIV/AIDS and I knew education on this is important. Love to all. God bless.’
However, some of the tweets posted before the Instagram apology, in which DaBaby – real name Jonathan Kirk – defended himself, remain up.
He wrote on July 27: ‘I tell fans to put a cellphone light in the air y’all start a million man March. I told you y’all digested that wrong but I ain’t gone lie I’m impressed. Now show this same amount of support when a racist cop kill one of our black ass…YA NOT.
‘Anybody who done ever been effected by AIDS/HIV y’all got the right to be upset, what I said was insensitive even though I have no intentions on offending anybody. So my apologies.
‘But the LGBT community… I ain’t trippin on y’all, do you. y’all business is y’all business.’
DaBaby’s comments have led to him being dropped from the bills at Lollapalooza and the Governors Ball Festival, and many celebrities have called him out, including Madonna, Sir Elton John and Demi Lovato.
Dua Lipa, who enlisted DaBaby for her single Levitating, also said she was ‘shocked’ by his comments.
Miley Cyrus, who is pansexual, said she wanted to educate the rapper, writing: ‘It’s easier to cancel someone than to find forgiveness and compassion in ourselves or take the time to change hearts and minds. here’s no more room for division if we want to keep seeing progress! Knowledge is power! I know I still have so much to learn!’
She tagged DaBaby and directed him towards resources that could help him learn, as well as DMing him.
