Izzy Armstrong (Cherylee Houston) has been struggling in Coronation Street, feeling unable to open up to bosses Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) and Carla Connor (Alison King).
The popular character has been shielding since the beginning of the pandemic, and has since resumed work at Underworld, albeit from home.
Sarah, however, was left concerned several weeks ago when it became clear that Izzy was struggling to meet the deadline.
Carla, meanwhile, was less than impressed with the quality of Izzy’s work, and wasted little time in hopping on a video call to complain.
When both Sarah and Carla quizzed her about what was wrong and if they could do anything to help, Izzy killed the call.
In upcoming scenes, however, Izzy opens up to her bosses about what she’s been going through, with supportive neighbour Fergus by her side.
‘I know was luckier than some as I had Jake with me,’ she says, ‘but what if he got the virus from school and passed it on?
‘Everyday when he came home I made him get straight in the bath and put his clothes in the wash. I was too afraid to even hug him! Not that that was easy, given how much pain I’m in.
‘Having to do everything myself, it made me put extra strain on my body. I keep dislocating and damaging myself.
‘I learned to fake it until Jake went to bed. I painted on a smile so he wouldn’t feel scared.
‘The panic. It was there all the time! What if something happened to me? What would happen to Jake?
I’ve spent my life asking for help, I’ve learned not to be proud. It wasn’t about needing help, it was about not wanting to die.’
Sarah and Carla listen, offering to support her in any way that can.
Coronation Street airs these scenes Wednesday August 4 at 8:30pm on ITV.
