A man who has been convicted of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend is representing himself against charges that he murdered a police officer. Markeith Loyd, 45, only has his former lawyers as standby counsel in the trial on the death of Lt Debra Clayton.
Loyd was previously convicted and sentenced to life in prison for murdering his girlfriend Sade Dixon.
Court notes on Monday from Orange County, Florida, obtained by Law & Crime read: ‘Attorney’s T Lenamon & T Marrero are to remain as standby counsel. The court not finding that attorney’s are incompetent to proceed as attorney’s of record.’
Loyd killed Dixon and attempted to kill her brother in December 2016. He had various chances to leave the scene but proceeded to kill Dixon, according to prosecutors.
While Loyd was on the run about a month after killing his girlfriend, Clayton reportedly confronted him at a Walmart. Loyd shot and killed the police lieutenant and apparently said he acted in self-defense.
‘The suspect loops backwards while simultaneously drawing a handgun from his waist and taking cover behind one of the concrete pillars,’ documents stated.
Clayton drew her own gun, but Loyd allegedly fired three gunshots and struck Clayton in the hip. Even after Clayton fell, Loyd allegedly kept firing until she died on the ground.
‘The suspect now leaves Sergeant Clayton laying on her back and runs to a two-door vehicle parked in the adjacent row and casually leaves the area,’ the documents stated.
In the trial over his girlfriend’s death, Loyd testified that she confronted him with a gun during their argument. However, Dixon dropped the weapon before her boyfriend murdered her.
