Two men have been arrested after a police officer was attacked while treating a man who had fallen down a Tube escalator.

The officer was giving first aid to the injured passenger when he was suddenly struck around the head, leaving him with facial fractures and serious injuries to his shoulder and upper body.

The ‘shocking’ assault took place at Camden Town station in north London minutes after England’s penalty shootout defeat to Italy in Sunday’s Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

Paramedics were called to treat the officer as well as the person he was originally tending to – and both were taken to hospital.

The officer was discharged from hospital on Monday and is now recovering at home.

British Transport Police said two men, both aged 22 and from Wolverhampton, have been arrested on suspicion of GBH and remain in custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Gary Pinner said: ‘This is a pleasing development in our investigation into what was a shocking act of violence on an officer helping someone in need.’

He said that the investigation into the incident continues and urged anyone who witnessed the incident to text 61016 or to call 0800 40 50 40.
