Real Madrid want to sign Donny van de Beek on loan as part of Manchester United’s £50million transfer move for Raphael Varane, reports say.

Old Trafford chiefs have made signing a new centre back their priority after agreeing a deal with Borussia Dortmund to sign England star Jadon Sancho.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a known admirer of Varane and the France World Cup winner is said to be keen on a move to the Theatre of Dreams as he seeks a new challenge following his decade-long spell at the Bernabeu.

United have opened talks with Real Madrid over Varane and, according to The Sun, the Spanish club have discussed the possibility of signing Van de Beek on loan as part of the deal.

Much was expected of Van de Beek following his £40m move from Ajax last summer but he has flattered to deceive for the Red Devils, scoring just once in 36 appearances in all competitions.

Reports have claimed Solskjaer intends to rely on Van de Beek more next season but the Dutchman has been urged to leave Old Trafford by a number of pundits due to his limited game-time.

Former Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart, for example, said last month: ‘He fit perfectly into the Ajax system, but he doesn’t fit at Manchester United.

‘If nobody leaves United [this summer], he will be lucky to get in the starting line-up. He is far too good to sit on the bench for two seasons. He needs minutes very quickly. He is still young, but time flies.

‘A club like Borussia Dortmund would have been a better step for him. Manchester United might be a step too far for him.’

Varane has won four Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles at Real Madrid and former Red Devils captain Rio Ferdinand cannot see him leaving the Bernabeu this summer.

‘He fit perfectly into the Ajax system, but he doesn’t fit at Manchester United,’ Van der Vaart told ESPN. ‘If nobody leaves United [this summer], he will be lucky to get in the starting line-up.

‘He is far too good to sit on the bench for two seasons. He needs minutes very quickly. He is still young, but time flies.
