Naomi Osaka has expressed her nerves over the release of her Netflix documentary series, saying that she was ‘terrified’ of its launch ‘in light of everything that happened recently’.
Earlier this year, tennis star Naomi withdrew from the French Open after facing a fine for choosing not to take part in press conferences at the Grand Slam.
The 23-year-old explained in a statement that she was ‘feeling vulnerable and anxious’ in Paris at the time, which is why she felt it was ‘better to exercise self-care and skip the press conferences’.
Having missed this year’s Wimbledon Champion, Naomi has now released a three-part mini-series on Netflix following her life over a two-year period ahead of her Tokyo Olympics campaign.
In a statement shared on social media, Naomi explained that the docu-series has been in the works for the past two and a half years.
‘In light of everything that happened recently I was terrified of this being released,’ she said.
‘This isn’t like a tennis match where I win or lose and from there people can say whether I did well or not. This is a look into my life from certain time periods and I can’t fight the feeling of wondering how will it be received.’
The four-time Grand Slam champion stated that the special ‘is in some ways my soul and a reflection of who I am’.
‘I hope there are pieces that people can relate to and maybe other pieces that would help people understand why I make the choices I make. If it doesn’t that’s cool too, it took me a while but I realize that I can’t please everyone and I’m really not trying to.’
Naomi wrote that when she goes to sleep, she hopes she is ‘at peace with myself’, expressing her hope that others also feel the same way.
‘I’m excited/nervous for you guys to see it and I hope you enjoy it lol. Love you all and stay safe,’ she concluded.
The Naomi Osaka series has been directed by Garrett Bradley, whose previous work includes Oscar-nominated documentary Time and Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us.
Naomi recently thanked Meghan Markle, Michelle Obama and Novak Djokovic for their support after her withdrawal from the French Open.
The Japanese tennis player said that she ‘could not be more excited’ to compete in the Tokyo Olympics, saying it was a ‘dream come true’ to play ‘in front of the Japanese fans’.
Naomi Osaka’s documentary series is available to watch on Netflix.
