Formula 1 driver Lando Norris was left ‘shaken’ after he was mugged outside Wembley following England’s Euro 2020 final shootout defeat to Italy on Sunday evening.
There were chaotic and shocking scenes at the stadium as large groups of ticketless fans, thought to number around 2,500, managed to evade security and force their way into Wembley ahead of kick-off.
A large number of supporters had their legitimate seats taken by these so-called fans, with even Italy manager Roberto Mancini’s son forced to watch from the Wembley steps when his seat was stolen.
There were even a number of VIP fans who were affected by the pandemonium, with F1 ace Norris caught up in the dramatic scenes after the end of the match as he looked to exit the area.
According to The Sun, the 21-year-old was ambushed by a group of people as he got into his McLaren GT supercar to drive home, with one man grabbing him while another tore off his £40,000 Richard Mille watch.
Norris’ team, McLaren, confirmed the incident on Monday night in a brief statement, saying: ‘McLaren Racing can confirm that Lando Norris was involved in an incident, after the Euro 2020 final match at Wembley, during which the watch he was wearing was taken.
‘Thankfully, Lando was unharmed but he is understandably shaken.
‘The team is supporting Lando and we are sure that racing fans will join us in wishing him all the best for the British Grand Prix this weekend.
‘As this is now a police matter we cannot comment further.’
An eye witness told The Sun: ‘Lando was held and another robber pulled off his watch in a split second. Lando looked pretty shaken up. Security had been a nightmare all night.’
The terrible scenes at Wembley before, during and after the game have prompted huge questions over the lack of police presence at the final, while the carnage has severely hurt the UK and Ireland’s joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup.
