Emmerdale actor Simon Lennon has dismissed Ben Tucker’s fears that he will always be second best to jailed Robert Sugden in the eyes of Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), insisting there is a real love between the couple.
Chatting to Metro.co.uk about whether Ben has Robert in the back of his mind, Simon replied: ‘Ben and Aaron are a separate entity to Aaron and Robert. Ben never knew Robert so he only knows of Aaron’s previous relationship with him.
‘Obviously Robert was a huge part of Aaron’s life and I think Ben and Aaron’s relationship is something completely new.
‘Ben has a huge amount of love for Aaron. It’s still the early stages for them. They’re still learning about each other.
‘ The more time they spend together, the closer they become. They care a lot for one another and have each other’s backs. And I think that’s a beautiful thing.’
And the star is hopeful that the pair can last the course.
He smiled: ‘They have already been through so much together. Relationships aren’t easy. Especially when there is past trauma involved.
‘But they’re strong as a couple and I think they deserve to be happy.’
But there are obstacles to overcome as Ben struggles to deal with Liv’s alcoholism in the wake of his dad Warren’s dependence on drink.
Simon shared: ‘With his personal history with his Dad, he knows a lot about different stages of the trauma and struggle that come with alcoholism. He wants to be there and support where he can.
‘Ultimately, he wants to help her. He’s seen someone he loves go through the dark side of alcohol addiction and wants to support Liv and Aaron, when they need it.
‘Liv was always such a big supporter of Aaron and Ben, in the early days, so Ben definitely has a soft spot for her in his heart.
‘The last thing Ben wants is to drive a wedge between Aaron and Liv. In trying to help, his goal has always been to bring them closer and help bridge any gulfs that have emerged between them.
‘His intentions are good, just sometimes things don’t always work out how you plan them to.’
