A vehicle has crashed into a ‘number of people’ outside a pub in South Wales in a ‘horrific’ incident this evening.

Pictures from the scene show several ambulances and fire engines, while a police cordon is in place around the street.

A witness described how the outside of the Windsor pub, where there were tables, was busy in the nice weather before the collision.

They described seeing several people ‘badly injured’ saying they had only seen similar scenes on the news.

A large emergency services response is under way at the scene of the incident on Llantrisant Road in Pontyclun.

South Wales Police urged the public to avoid the area.

The force has not yet said how many people have been injured.

The owner of the nearby pub wrote on Facebook: ‘Hiya all. I have had a few messages in regards to the situation tonight. Everyone has been taken to hospital and the emergency services are on the case.

‘Thank you all for your help. Thanks to all by standers who helped and all the emergency services. Thanks Tia and team x.’

A witness told Wales Online: ‘It was horrific. The pub had four or five tables outside the front and was busy with people having drinks in the nice weather. I walked through to the back beer garden to wait while someone ordered drinks and there was a massive crash. It sounded like somebody had dropped a load of beer glasses.

‘I walked into the pub and someone was on the phone to 999 and I could heard them saying they needed more than one ambulance.

‘There were several, maybe five, who looked badly injured. And many more who were sitting up with cuts.

‘I’ve only seen stuff like that on the news. I thought it just can’t be happening.’

Leader of the Welsh Conservatives Andrew RT Davies said in a tweet: ‘Shocking news from Pontyclun this evening. Thank you to the efforts of the emergency services on the scene. My thoughts are with everyone involved.’

South Wales Police tweeted: ‘Emergency services are at the scene of a serious road traffic collision on Llantrisant Road in Pontyclun near the Windsor pub.

‘A vehicle has collided with a number of pedestrians. The public is advised to avoid the area while the matter is being dealt with.’
