Rio Ferdinand has questioned Gareth Southgate’s reluctance to pick Jadon Sancho for England and has told the Three Lions boss to unleash the Borussia Dortmund star against Czech Republic.
Southgate’s side started their Euro 2020 campaign with an encouraging win over Croatia, but were handed a sobering reality check on Friday night as Steve Clarke’s side emerged with a fully deserved point.
England boast one of the best and most varied attacks in the tournament, but they hardly created a chance of note against Scotland and Southgate’s refusal to fully utilise his bench frustrated Ferdinand.
Sancho, who looks increasingly destined to join Manchester United later this summer, starred during the qualifying campaign but is yet to make his Euros bow and was an unused substitute against the Scots, much to Ferdinand’s dismay.
He told this Five YouTube channel: ‘The substitutions, I thought they were poor.
You can make a lot of substitutions now, he only made two substitutions when you can make five.
‘Utilise that bench, that’s what it’s there for. We’ve got all these players. Sancho? What’s he done? He must have done something behind the scenes.
‘He (Sancho) for the last three seasons has the second most goal involvements in this England squad after Sterling and Harry Kane No.3.
‘I really can’t understand it. He didn’t get on the bench in the first game, he didn’t get his boots wet in the second game and you’ve got that talent sitting there and you’ve got a team that are sitting waiting to get beat.
‘Just unleash these boys, we look like a rigid old England team again.’
