Jodie Whittaker is rumoured to be departing Doctor Who after the special episodes in 2022.
The Broadchurch star, the first woman ever to play the role, is going to lead the new series as well as two specials next year before her Doctor regenerates, according to reports.
It comes amid claims she won’t appear on the cover of the Doctor Who annual for 2022, which will have an image of the trusted Tardis instead. It is said to be the first annual in its nearly 60-year history that will not carry a picture of the current Time Lord.
Jodie’s doctor is expected to regenerate into the 14th Doctor in a special episode due to air next year.
An insider told The Mirror: ‘As ever bosses are staying tight-lipped about what they have planned, but with filming still ongoing they clearly have plans for episodes to be playing out much later into 2022 – so there’s still more to come for Jodie’s Doctor.’
The BBC declined to comment when approached by Metro.co.uk.
Filming on the new series – Jodie’s third outing as the Doctor – is ongoing, having resumed in November when the pandemic brought things to a halt.
The 38-year-old and co-star Mandip Gill, who plays the Time Lord’s companion Yaz, will be joined by comedian John Bishop as a new character called Dan.
In an interview with Metro.co.uk the actor praised his co-stars for easing him in to Doctor Who’s sci-fi world.
‘I didn’t realise, I suppose until you’re in it as an actor, but also as a participant of something that is iconic, how big it is because you only know through the filter of your own experience. So I remembered as a kid, the reboot of it and I’ve always enjoyed watching it.
‘Being in it and doing the things that you have to do to be in it, green screen acting and so on, it’s been a massive experience.
‘Jodie Whittaker and Mandip have been brilliant because they’re there all the time. They’ve been really supportive of someone like me coming in to it who’s not done a long running show like this before.’
He boards the series following the exits of stars Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole in Revolution of the Daleks on New Year’s Day.
