Jessica Biel never intended to keep her second pregnancy a secret last year – but then the pandemic happened.
The 39-year-old actress and her singer husband Justin Timberlake welcomed their second son, 11-month-old Phineas, into the world last summer.
When reports of the tot’s birth surfaced in July, fans were stunned as neither Jessica nor Justin had confirmed that they were expecting again.
And now, Jessica – who also has six-year-old son Silas with Justin – has revealed it ‘wasn’t supposed to be a secret’, but the practicalities of lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic meant she didn’t leave the house at all during the later stages of her pregnancy, so no-one saw her baby bump.
Speaking to Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast, Jessica caught him up with how she was spending her time, explaining: ‘I’m spending a lot of time at home on Zooms in my apartment. Hanging with my baby, changing diapers, doing nap time.’
Once Dax expressed surprise over hearing about the new arrival, the Sinner star and producer clarified how it had all gone down.
She joked: ‘I had, like, a secret Covid baby. It wasn’t like it was supposed to be a secret. It was just Covid happened, and then I went to Montana with my family and never left.’
Jessica also revealed details of Phineas’ birth, sharing how grateful she was that by the time she went into labour with him, hospital restrictions had eased slightly, allowing hubby Justin to be at her side for the experience.
The 7th Heaven actor said: ‘There was a moment there that there was nobody allowed at all and I was really getting nervous about that situation.
‘But yes, he was allowed. I think if I had to be there alone, that would have been horrible. I would have been really scared.’
And now the couple has two young children, the actor-producer admitted that she and Justin have their hands full – but love enjoying the different stages their kids are at.
She shared: ‘Someone said to me, “Two is like having a thousand.” And that’s exactly what it feels like – the balance of everything is very different and super hard.
‘But I agree. I mean, it’s amazing. It’s so interesting. It’s so funny.
‘The conversations I’m having now with my 6-year-old… is so cool [sic]. Like, he’s a real person saying the funniest stuff and he’s so sensitive and tender. It’s just so interesting to see that part of it happen – and the little one is just cute as hell.’
Host Dax also laughingly suggested ‘joining empires’ by betrothing his six-year-old daughter to Jessica and Justin’s six-year-old son, ‘medieval style’, in order to form a ‘prominent province’ with Jessica agreeing: ‘I think it could be done.’
The star also shared how she’d felt pushed into following a career modelled around Angelina Jolie’s but claimed it ‘wasn’t creatively fulfilling for me’.
