EastEnders’ cheeky charmer Terry ‘Rocky’ Cant (Brian Conley) is going all out in order to win over Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) – as he gets dressed up to the nines and puts on a performance she won’t forget in a hurry during their first date.
Rocky was never going to be a kebab and half a bottle of Blossom Hill kind of date and he has made his attraction to Kathy pretty clear from the get go, disappointing Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) in the process.
As Kathy agrees to go on a date with Sonia’s (Natalie Cassidy) dad, he knows he has to pull out all of the stops – and his elaborate display certainly grabs the attention of Kathy – and half of Albert Square.
But will this put Kathy off or will she be won over by his enthusiasm?
Discussing the rocky love triangle his character finds himself in, Brian told Metro.co.uk: ‘They are of a similar age and she’s single. But Shirley Carter is
also making a play for Rocky. She tries to lace me with alcohol in the Vic.
‘That was very weird because Rocky is drunk and I haven’t had an alcoholic drink in 17 years. I kept saying to props, “Is this really not alcohol?”
‘Alcohol-free beer has come on leaps and bounds. This tasted just like real beer. They said, “No, don’t worry. It’s not alcohol.”‘
But it seems like Brian and Rocky aren’t so different when it comes to outrageous romantic gestures – as Brian’s proposal to his own wife surpassed even Rocky’s efforts for Kathy.
He told us: ‘I proposed as a knight in full armour. On a horse. With a choir. It’s our silver wedding anniversary in August. We’ve known each other 31 years.’
If things get to that stage with Kathy, we can only imagine what Rocky might have under his hat to try and top that!
After all, they are basically the same person.
Brian grinned: ‘I like the character. He’s very much me. He’s a cheeky cockney. My dad was a cab driver.
‘I was born in Paddington. I lived in Kilburn until I was about eight and
then moved to Wembley. He is me.’
EastEnders airs these scenes in a boxset which launches on BBC iPlayer on June 21. It will air on TV screens Tuesday June 22 at 7pm.
