A café director is facing criminal charges over a bag placed in the front window which read: ‘F**k the police’.
Pink Peacock in Glasgow styles itself as a ‘queer, Yiddish, anarchist, pay-what-you-can café’.
It shared a video showing officers asking an employee to remove the tote bag before taking it in for evidence.
The employee then replaces it with another one which says ‘daloy polizei’, which translates from Yiddish as ‘down with the police’.
Café director Morgan Holleb, 32, has now been charged with breaching the peace.
The LGBT café said on social media: ‘This an obvious attempt to intimidate us, but it’s not going to work.’
Holleb told Jewish News: ‘We’re not surprised we’re getting this reaction from the police.
‘It’s just unacceptable, it’s a clear abuse of police powers.
‘This isn’t about us and tote bags, it’s about the role of policing in our community.
‘They’re wasting time and taxpayer money to put a tote bag in an evidence bag.’
The café is currently closed and undergoing renovations. It has been feeding members of the Glasgow community in need over the coronavirus crisis with a pay-what-you-can meal delivery service.
When it opens it will be an late night and alcohol-free space where everyone is welcome – except for ‘cops and terfs’ (trans-exclusionary radical feminists).
Other causes it champions with window displays include Romani travellers and the reopening of local libraries.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said a member of the public had complained about the Pink Peacock bags.
As Metro.co.uk reported last year, officers are not expected to take offence to foul language and typically a complaint needs to be made for police to act.
The spokesperson said: ‘Police in Glasgow received a complaint from the public regarding an item displaying offensive language in the window of a premises in the Victoria Road area of Govanhill.
‘We can confirm that a 32-year-old man has been charged in connection with a breach of the peace, and the item has been removed from the premises.’
