Paul Scholes revealed he has a major concern over Manchester United’s goalkeeping conundrum following Dean Henderson’s unconvincing display in last night’s 4-2 defeat against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has afforded the England international the opportunity to establish himself as the club’s No.1 over the course of the last month but he has failed to stake a convincing claim to take over from David de Gea on a permanent basis.
Henderson, according to Scholes, was partially at fault for three of the goals United conceded last night as Liverpool sealed an impressive victory which provided their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League with a major shot in the arm.
The 24-year-old was particularly culpable for the goal which saw Jurgen Klopp’s side take a 3-1 lead within two minutes of the re-start, spilling Trent Alexnader-Arnold’s shot straight into Roberto Firmino’s path, while his positioning for Mohamed Salah’s game-clincher was highly suspect.
‘It was another mistake by Dean Henderson,’ Scholes told Premier League Productions, analysing Firmino’s second goal.
‘I’d say three of the four goals were not so much his fault, but I think he’d be disappointed with his contribution tonight. The goalkeeper again was less than convincing.’
‘I think the goalkeeper has made it an easy finish for him by going backwards,’ the former United midfielder added, referring to Henderson’s decision to stay on his line as Salah raced through on goal in injury time.
‘I think he’ll be disappointed when he looks back at it Henderson, I’m not saying he could’ve saved it but he could’ve made it a hell of a lot harder for him.
‘We see him here he’s not even looking at the goal but he has to come out and make the angle tight for him all he does is go back and back and leaves a good five to 10-yard gap for him to pass the ball into he makes it so easy.’
De Gea, meanwhile, is unlikely to accept playing second fiddle to Henderson next season and should the long-serving Spaniard depart in search of regular first team football, Scholes believes United will need to sign a new No.1 in the transfer window.
He added: ‘The goalkeeper situation is a big worry. I felt the timing was right to give Henderson a chance but he hasn’t convinced me yet.
‘If De Gea is leaving do they need a No.1 or a No.2? I wanted Dean to do well, but I think he’s been at fault for three of the goals tonight.’
