Coronation Street star says Nina Lucas dying would be a ‘terrible loss’ to Roy Cropper

Roy Cropper’s (David Neilson) life has changed a great deal since he took niece Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) under his wing in Coronation Street.

The relationship was a rocky one to start, but things for Nina and Roy have now developed into something quite beautiful. Roy and Nina both understand each other (near enough!) and we’re truly now starting to see a father-daughter dynamic between the two of them.

In scenes that aired in Wednesday’s episode of the ITV soap, Roy’s world was turned upside down when he discovered Nina had been attacked.

As Roy sat by Nina’s bedside, David Neilson delivered a powerful, moving monologue about Roy’s life in Weatherfield, speaking about constantly finding people to look after and how Nina remains his only family member.

With Roy now supporting Nina through the aftermath of this attack, David Neilson spoke to Metro.co.uk and other press recently, and mentioned the ‘terrible loss’ Roy realises he would suffer if he had to say goodbye to Nina:

‘Over this period, and the attack, him sitting by the bed thinking about life and the possibility of her not being there he feels a tremendous sense of loss, the duty aspect of everything, there is more to it than that. He is dreading what could occur. He moves on in a way to a real relationship to being a father really, which he has to act on.

A lot of people have been through that flat, I’m not sure that they’ve all left! He realises during this event that because he took Nina in through duty really, Roy tends to operate, like a moral code, which if he didn’t have this he’d fall apart, he’d been the dangers person on the street. He doesn’t always want to do what he does but he’s actually shunted into the situation where he inherits Nina, they don’t get on initially but he took her in because he had to.’

‘When he’s close to losing her he realises what a terrible loss it would be because she is family.’
