April 28 is a very important date – it is Ed Balls Day!
For the past 10 years, the #EdBalls Day hashtag comes out to play, as people across the internet come together to create tweets and memes – dedicated to former shadow chancellor Mr. Balls.
But why is it that April 28 has come to be known as Ed Balls Day?

Why is today known as Ed Balls Day?
It all started with a tweet, ten years ago.
On April 28, 2011, Ed Balls was on Twitter and tried typing his name into the social media app to find an article about himself.
But instead of searching his name, he tweeted it out instead and the rest of Twitter was quick to pounce on his social media hiccup.
Thus #EdBallsDay was born.
At the time, Mr Balls was still the Labour shadow chancellor of the exchequer although he had yet to be thrown even more into the public eye with his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015.
When is Ed Balls Day?
Ed Balls Day is always on April 28, to mark the date that fateful tweet went out into the world.
While the internet certainly enjoys the day, Ed Balls himself has taken to marking the occasion to both join in the fun and to highlight the work he is doing.
Last year, Ed Balls marked the day by putting out a video teaching kids how to work out the volume of balls – it was also a contribution to the BBC Bitesize Daily lessons that took place during the coronavirus lockdown last year.
