Porto manager Sergio Conceicao claims to have been insulted by Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel during the Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday, after heated scenes at full-time in Seville.
The Portuguese side beat the Blues 1-0 on Tuesday but it was not enough to keep them in the competition, losing 2-1 on aggregate.
Players and management from both sides clashed after the final whistle, and while it seemed like a typical bout of handbags, tempers were clearly frayed.
Especially so on the Porto side, with Conceicao saying he felt insulted by his opposite number, although didn’t really go into detail as to why.
‘I was insulted by this gentleman who was next door,’ said Conceicao after the match, via the Sun.
‘My English is not perfect, it’s no use talking about it. There was no exchange of words because I was focused on the game, I don’t know why he reacted. I didn’t quite understand.
‘I heard some insults. It was not pretty and my irritation at the end had something to do with it. I didn’t even say the word to him. It wasn’t like that, but it’s over.’
It seemed possible that this was just a misunderstanding, but Conceicao confirmed that the fourth official had also heard the offending langauge.
‘I told the referee that the fourth referee heard the insults,’ he said.
Tuchel was not to be drawn on the altercation when asked in his post-match press conference, simply saying: ‘No harm done.’
The only goal of the game was a memorable one, with Mehdi Taremi scoring an overhead kick, but it came in the 93rd minute and was too late for Porto to capitalise on.
Chelsea progress into the semi-finals, where they are joined by Paris Saint-Germain after they ousted Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.
The final two quarter-finals are played on Wednesday as Manchester City take a 2-1 lead to Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool look to overturn a 3-1 deficit at Anfield against Real Madrid.
Tuchel said he will be watching the Liverpool game and would never write off their chances of a remarkable comeback.
‘The Liverpool tie is far from over but I will watch it for sure,’ said the German.
‘It is a pleasure to watch it as a semi-finalist, which is a great achievement. We will watch these games and everything is possible. Liverpool are very strong at home so we take what we get. It is a good situation for us.’
