The Pride of Britain Awards have sent support to Ashley Cain and his family amid his daughter Azaylia’s cancer battle.
Azaylia, who is eight months old, was given days to live by doctors after they discovered more tumours in her brain and stomach as she prepared for vital treatment in her battle against leukaemia.
Her parents, Ex on the Beach star Ashley and his girlfriend Safiyya Vorajee, took the baby home to make her as comfortable as possible, and Azaylia’s strength has inspired the nation, with a clap in her honour taking place earlier in the week and fans leaving messages of support.
The Pride of Britain Awards, which honour Brits who have acted courageously or extraordinarily, shared a post on Thursday night, calling Azaylia and her family ‘an inspiration’.
Along with a picture of Ashley and Safiyya holding their daughter in hospital, the post read: ‘Sending love and support to Azaylia’s family. Your strength and courage is an inspiration #ourprideofbritain.’
Fans said they would be voting for Azaylia, with one person writing: ‘Give her the child of courage award now.’
A Facebook page set up in honour of the baby, called Azaylia Diamond Cain Journey To Fight Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, saw thousands of fans sharing evidence that they had nominated Azaylia for a Pride of Britain Award.
Ashley, 30, had appealed for help on social media after they learned that their daughter’s life could be saved by CAR T-cell treatment in Singapore that would cost £1million.
However, the results of a CT scan showed that Azaylia had two tumours on her brain, as well as tumours in her stomach, spleen, lungs and kidneys, and she could no longer undergo the treatment.
Given the news that Azaylia’s disease, which she has been battling since she was two months old, is terminal, Ashley and Safiyya took her home to spend time with her, although Azaylia has been back in hospital for a transfusion and antibiotics after blood was found in her tears and her heart rate soared to 200bpm.
Over the last day, Ashley and Safiyya have been sharing videos of themselves dancing with their daughter, with friends and family also visiting Azaylia with presents and cuddles.
Safiyya uploaded a series of videos showing that Azaylia had eaten for the first time in weeks, after her grandmother made her a meal.
After Azaylia chewed on a piece of broccoli in one video, she could be seen clutching a green bean and with pasta sauce on her front, with Safiyya saying: ‘Look who’s eating their greens?
‘She has just had so much fun with my dinner. and it’s the first time she’s eaten in about two weeks. She amazes me.’
Acute myeloid leukaemia is an aggressive cancer of the white blood cells, and is rare, affecting around 3,100 people in the UK every year.
The disease is most common in people over the age of 75, and usually requires intensive chemotherapy.
