Rescue teams are desperately searching for ‘multiple people in the water’ after 129-ft boat capsized in a severe storm off the coast of Louisiana.

Six people have so far been rescued after the Coast Guard received an emergency call at around 4.30pm that a commercial lift vessel had upturned eight miles off Port Fourchon.

It is not known how many people are still missing in the water.

Spokesman Petty Officer Jonathan Lally said the Coast Guard received reports of ‘multiple vessels hit’ in the storm and teams were still unable to fly rescue helicopters due to the extreme weather conditions.

Mr Lally said: ‘Currently we have multiple Coast Guard assets as well as good samaritan vessels searching for people off of a capsized lift vessel.
