Kate Garraway’s Good Morning Britain co-stars have celebrated the news that her husband has returned home from hospital.
Derek Draper was rushed to hospital last March with coronavirus symptoms, and had been fighting for his life in a coma ever since – with the illness affecting his entire body.
It emerged on Thursday that, following the lengthy health battle, the 53-year-old would be returning to his family home in north London, to continue his recovery surrounded by his loved ones.
Appearing on today’s instalment of the ITV show, Kate’s co-stars couldn’t help but cheer the update, sharing their well wishes for the couple.
Ben Shephard began: ‘The news that he has been able to travel home and is living at home now, with Kate, Darcey and Bill… Honestly this means an awful lot to us because, of course, we’ve shared this with Kate very personally.
‘But when we come in and see the messages from you guys, everybody at home, just saying how excited you are and how pleased you are.
‘It’s the first step, and this is the really important thing, in a very, very long journey for Derek and for Kate, for the family, trying to work out how it’s going to unfold.’
‘It’s a godsend, it really is,’ Richard Arnold continued. ‘It’s not so much joy unconfined but it’s a relief, a palpable relief for all of us.
‘Just to imagine that family together again under one roof.’
Derek had been one of the worst-affected coronavirus patients to survive in the UK.
His recovery was the focus of a recent ITV documentary, and the former lobbyist is now off all machines.
He was driven back home via ambulance where it is hoped being around his family will boost his mental health and help him make further breakthroughs in his recovery.
Sharing news of his return, a friend of Kate’s told The Sun: ‘Kate’s dreamt of this day for so long, and can’t thank wonderful NHS staff enough.
‘This past year has given Derek and Kate an absolutely unbreakable bond – she has been such a rock, and a total inspiration to everyone in Britain battling their own horror stories with the pernicious disease.
‘The hope is that by boosting his mental health – which being surrounded by his loved ones clearly will do – Derek’s physical health will be significantly bolstered too.’
Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays, at 6am, on ITV.
