Exodus drummer Tom Hunting has revealed he is battling cancer of the stomach.
The 56-year-old announced the news via the band’s Facebook page and explained that he is undergoing treatment for a squamous cell carcinoma.
Hunting explained: ‘It’s a gastric tumour that was diagnosed in my upper stomach in February.
‘I’m making this public to raise awareness for people to pay attention to symptoms of stomach and esophageal issues. If they persist, please go get it checked out. I’m not gonna be sheepish talking about it.
‘I feel that if I can help someone with what I’ve learned, or someone out there has information to share with me, it’s a win-win! When you can name the enemy, it’s empowering, and you’re one step closer to killing it!’
After sharing the ‘bad news’, Hunting insisted that he ‘feels great physically’.
He then vowed: ‘I’m gonna beat this like a f*****g snare drum that owes me money!!! I’ve had great doctors and a great support system that is an army in itself. I’m ready for the fight!’
Remaining optimistic about Exodus’ plans for the year, Hunting said: ‘We have a lot to celebrate this year with the release of what will be a career-defining album and tours to follow! I’m stoked for everyone to hear it, and even more excited to get out there and play some of it! I will see you all very soon! Cheers!!!’
His bandmates added in the post: ‘With our never ending support for our bandmate, friend and brother. We Love You.’
Hunting was flooded with well wishes from friends and fans, with fellow band Overkill tweeting: ‘We love you Tom! Stay strong brother and kick its ass!’
‘Damn bro, that sucks. Hang in there brother. Long live the Kings of Thrash Metal!!’ another said.
One supporter warned: ‘Cancer doesn’t stand a chance with Tom. Can’t wait to see you guys on the road when touring gets going again!’
Another replied: ‘Good luck, Tom. Early detection is the key. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!’
Hunting formed Californian band Exodus in 1979 and is still the only original member despite quitting the group several times.
Last week, the band guitarist Gary Holt revealed he had tested positive for coronavirus but said most of his symptoms had subsided.
Exodus are set to release their 11th studio album, Persona Non Grata, in June.
