Coronation Street actress Ruxandra Porojnicu has been facing racial abuse from a small number of angry viewers – who have told her to ‘get back to her own country.’

The star’s character Alina Pop is currently in the middle of a spring affair storyline, which has seen her fall for mechanic Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall). The feelings appear to be mutual and it is set to drive a potentially permanent split between him and Fiz Stape (Jennie McAlpine).

Ruxandra has admitted that she expected some backlash from fans but revealed that some take things far too far, bringing racial abuse into the trolling.

Speaking to The Sun, she explained: ‘I was very excited about the storyline and thought what a great opportunity it would be to work with two brilliant actors. But as a viewer I was gutted, because I really love Fiz and Tyrone together. I was really torn about it all.

‘The way the storyline has gone I’ve found the reactions to be quite mixed, which I was not expecting. The way it has been written created a good environment for Alina to be accepted by the audience. Well, some of them.

‘They’ve seen their romance blossom and neither meant for it to happen. I’ve had loads of people saying that they are actually happy for Tyrone.

‘But I’ve also had people saying, ‘Go back to your own country’, and calling me a homewrecker. I don’t take those comments seriously.’

The 27-year-old is Romanian born and tweeted to reaffirm that she doesn’t let the vile comments get under her skin, adding that she is ‘so grateful’ to be trusted with such a big storyline.

In coming weeks, Tyrone will be forced to face up to his feelings for Alina, leading to a crossroads for his relationship with Fiz.

And some fans appear to actually be on board with the new romance – but as for who Tyrone ends up with long term, if either, this remains to be seen.
