Easter is almost here, and with lockdown continuing, a rendezvous with loved ones isn’t on the cards.
You can meet another household outdoors, but if you’re tired of walks in the park, here are some family-friendly activities to celebrate the season.
Before you set the agenda though, make sure you gather supplies from the supermarket in good time, as their opening hours might have changed.
Whether it’s hands-on crafting you’re looking for – or something a bit more low-key like a movie night – check out our ultimate Easter guide below.
10 Easter activities to do with kids in lockdown
Egg and spoon race
You can’t go wrong with an egg and spoon race. Grab a utensil each, a chocolate or chicken egg, and see who can make it to the finish line first. Make it even trickier by introducing obstacles – whether you’re in the garden or the living room, a mini Easter Olympics is always fun.
Invent a spring-themed story
Tired of the same bedtime tales? Why not try inventing your own? Encourage your children to devise a plot, and then get crafty: write and illustrate the book together, or put on a performance in the evening.
Plant flowers
If the garden needs sprucing up, take the kids outside with you, and give them their own patch to manage. If you don’t have any outdoor space, you could plant a windowsill box of herbs, and encourage your children to maintain (and eat!) them.
Easter crafts
It wouldn’t be Easter without the crafts! Put your bairns in a homemade bonnet for the big day, or try decorating eggs to hang around the house.
You could also try decorating an Easter egg, by adding extras like sprinkles and melted white chocolate to the ones brought by the Easter bunny.
Just prepare for some mess.
Make brunch
Nothing beats a hot cross bun on the Easter weekend. If your children are a bit older, encourage them to create the brunch of their dreams, and give them free rein in the kitchen.
If this seems like a recipe for disaster, supermarkets across the UK are offering a wide range of bread delights, from chocolate to pizza flavour – which might be a bit easier for your budding cook.
Create a gift basket
A gift basket doesn’t have to be fancy. Encourage your little ones to draw pictures, write poems, or choose some chocolates to give away to the neighbours, and leave a socially distanced present for them on the doorstep.
While we can’t meet up with all our loved ones, we can still spread joy – just a bit more locally.
Play an Easter game
There are a multitude of springtime games you can add to your roster this year – and none of them require a console.
Extreme Egg Toss does exactly what you expect: toss the plush toy to improve motor skills, but not too powerfully or it will crack. Amazon sells versions of Easter Bingo, which helps younger children learn colours or shapes.
Or for something more high-stakes, why not purchase Egged On – a roulette-style game that hides a water-filled egg among the safe ones.
Alternatively, pin the tail on the bunny is extremely easy to do, and extremely cute. Use spare paper or cardboard to create a rabbit shape, and decorate to your heart’s content. Once up on the wall, blindfold your family members as they try to pin a cotton wool tail on the bunny. The closest wins!
Have an Easter-themed film night
For something more calm, pop on an Easter-themed film to relax. Films like Hop or Peter Rabbit are always great for little ones, while The Greatest Story Ever Told presents a religious retelling.
If it’s the nature that you like about the season, try Earth’s Great Rivers or A Wild Year on BBC iPlayer.
Easter egg hunt
It’s an old favourite for a reason. Buy a selection of tiny eggs online, and get hiding – perhaps spreading it over the weekend to add more intrigue.
For older children, a treasure hunt with clues can be even more fun, as long as it leads to a chocolatey bounty.
