Dr Hilary Jones has urged people not to break the rules and to ‘be careful’ now restrictions have eased, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the possibility of a third coronavirus wave.
As of Monday, the second stage of the government’s roadmap to easing lockdown came into play, allowing six people or two households to now mix publicly outdoors and in private gardens.
However, speaking on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, Dr Hilary urged the nation not to go against the restrictions in place and reminded those watching at home that while 30million people have received their vaccination, many more are still vulnerable.
‘Just less than half the population have been vaccinated,’ the medical professional said. ‘The vaccine doesn’t give 100% protection.’
Dr Hilary continued: ‘Cases are levelling off, but they’re still relatively high.
‘Each of those can give the virus to other people, we just have to be a little bit careful.’
Concerned that rule breaks could impact the success of lockdown being lifted, he continued: ‘It all depends on what we do as a society and if we’re crazy about breaking the rules and we go indoors, then the numbers will go up and we will have eased lockdown too easy, as we’ve done before. It’s within our power.’
Dr Hilary previously stated that he doesn’t think lockdown rules should be abandon until 90% of the population have been vaccinated.
‘In the last 15 months we have learned that we went into lockdown too late and we have come out of lockdown too early, those are the lessons we’ve learned three times so we need to be really careful,’ he said.
‘We can’t rely on vaccination alone, because unless you vaccinate 90% of the population and you get 90% efficacy with those vaccines, you’ve still got a huge number of people vulnerable to the infection.’
His concerns come after the Prime Minister warned a third wave currently occurring in Europe could hit the UK.
‘I’ve talked to our [European] friends repeatedly over the period. We’re all facing the same pandemic. We all have the same problems.I think one thing that’s worth stressing is that on the continent right now you can see sadly there is a third wave under way,’ he told Sky News.
‘People in this country should be under no illusions that previous experience has taught us that when a wave hits our friends, I’m afraid it washes up on our shores as well. I expect that we will feel those effects in due course.
‘That’s why we’re getting on with our vaccination programme as fast as we can.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
