‘We are doing everything we can to save summer holidays’, Matt Hancock says

The Health Secretary has said the Government is doing ‘everything’ within its power to make sure people can go on holiday this summer.

Matt Hancock said he understands the ‘yearning for certainty’ but warned there are still many unknowns, although he has already booked his own trip to Cornwall.

He told Sky News: ‘We are doing everything we can to make sure people can have that holiday. And even before then to see their loved ones.’

It comes as members of the cabinet clash over whether it is safe to book a summer getaway this summer.

Yesterday Grant Shapps sparked backlash after saying: ‘People shouldn’t be booking holidays right now – not domestically or internationally.’

But later that day, Downing Street appeared to distance themselves from the Transport Minister’s comments, saying it was was a ‘choice for individuals’.

At yesterday’s No 10 press briefing, Boris Johnson said it was ‘just too early for people to be certain about what we will be able to do this summer’.

Meanwhile Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden are working on packages to promote holidays in the UK, Whitehall sources told the Daily Mail.

This morning Hancock made no excuses for his booked trip to Cornwall, saying: ‘I have, that’s just a matter of fact.’

He added: ‘I do understand the yearning for certainty. But that is hard in a pandemic.’
