Chris Hemsworth has reportedly sought specialist treatment for a ‘severe back injury’ as filming on action movie Thor: Love and Thunder continues in Australia.

Earlier this week, new pictures emerged of Chris, 37, and his Marvel co-star Chris Pratt, 41, on the set of the fourth Thor film, the pair dressed in costume as their respective characters Thor and Peter Quill/Star-Lord.

While the Australian actor appeared in high spirits in the photographs, it has been reported that he recently suffered a painful back injury that resulted in his seeking out treatment at a private hospital on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

After suffering acute back pain and swelling in the past few weeks, Chris was supposedly attended to by ‘specialist doctors’ at the hospital, who are said to have injected cortisone into his back.

In a report published by the Sunday Confidential via the Daily Mail, it said that he did not stay at the hospital overnight after his brief appointment.

According to the publication, it is not known how Chris became injured, although he is on the road to recovery.

In March 2019, Chris spoke to Men’s Health about the various aches and pains he sometimes suffers while exercising.

He admitted that while he ‘used to be able to get up and sprint’, ‘after lifting weights for so long and not getting in touch with my fast-twitch fibres, the snappiness that my body had [has gone].’

‘I need to do some more sprint work, I guess. It just hurts. Running is painful. I don’t do a lot of running for that reason. I’d rather have mobility in my body from surfing and get that fluidity that I enjoy,’ he stated at the time.

In addition to reprising the role of the ‘God of Thunder’ Thor, Chris is also set to play professional wrestler Hulk Hogan in an upcoming biopic.

During an interview with Total Film, Chris said that he ‘will have to put on more size than I ever have before, even more than I put on for Thor’ for the role.

Thor: Love and Thunder, which is part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is currently in production in Sydney.

It is being directed by Taika Waititi, who also directed the highly-acclaimed third Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok.

The upcoming sequel will mark the return of Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, while also bringing Natalie Portman back into the fold as astrophysicist Jane Foster, who will later become known as Mighty Thor.

Thor: Love and Thunder is due to be released in 2022.
