Sam Smith and Paramore star Hayley Williams were among those furious and heartbroken as they watched the controversial new Britney Spears documentary this weekend.
Framing Britney Spears aired on FX on Saturday and examined the Toxic singer’s career and the #FreeBritney movement rallying against her ongoing conservatorship.
It proved to be enlightening viewing for Williams, who highlighted the disregard for Britney’s mental health issues when they first came to light in 2008.
Reacting to the programme, Williams tweeted: ‘The Framing Britney Spears doc holy f**k. no artist today would have to endure the literal torture that media/society/utter misogynists inflicted upon her.
‘The mental health awareness conversation, culturally, could never be where it is without the awful price she has paid.’
Stay With Me singer Smith agreed with Williams’ sentiments and posted a finger emoji pointing downwards towards her tweet.
Many of Williams’ followers agreed with one responding: ‘Watching that documentary made me wince. Most of us didn’t have language to perceive / understand what was happening there.’
‘It’s insane. The 2008 footage of her being taken to the hospital is terrifying and the documentary didn’t even show the worst parts of that moment. A nightmare,’ another said.
One viewer weighed in: ‘We’re still miles and miles away from true mental health awareness, especially for women! The problem dates back at least to the 19th century, and probably before, when women could be sent to torture asylums on just a man’s word.’
However, another viewer argued: ‘See i don’t think we’ve learned much, the mental health conversation is largely in the same place and she’s still under conservatorship. the paparazzi problem still exists but a lot of it has now shifted to social media where you have access to hateful misogynistic comments 24/7.
One agreed: ‘I feel like if you’ve been paying attention to the #FreeBritney movement since the beginning there wasn’t anything new to learn in the documentary.. But this wasn’t for us, it’s for the people that are unaware.’
Britney’s assets have been under the control of her father Jamie Spears since 2008, when the mother-of-two was put on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold and had visitation rights to her children Sean and Jayden suspended.
Under the arrangement, Britney’s dad and a lawyer have the legal right to oversee and make decisions regarding her finances, health, business deals, and personal life.
The 39-year-old singer has since requested for the courts to remove Jamie as her co-conservator – with her attorney stating that she was ‘afraid’ of him and will not perform publicly again until this is changed.
Framing Britney Spears premieres on FX on February 5. As of yet, a UK air date has not been announced.
