Kate Garraway has revealed she’s not been able to visit husband Derek Draper in hospital since Christmas and fears it will be detrimental to his recovery.
The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here star was given permission to see her husband over Christmas with their two children Darcey, 14, and William, 11.
Derek, 53, has been in hospital since March after testing positive for coronavirus. He is now free of Covid-19 but the virus has wreaked havoc on his body, leaving holes in his heart and lungs. The former political lobbyist has emerged from his deep coma but is in a minimal state of consciousness.
Sharing an update on Good Morning Britain, Kate said on Thursday: ‘I haven’t been able to see him Ben [Shephard]. I haven’t seen him since Christmas, which means he’s back into a situation [of] looking at strangers in masks.
‘That’s the situation for everybody at the moment who’s got someone in hospital, it’s not unique to him. It’s tough, it’s also the same for people in care homes.
When you’re someone like him that is dealing with a consciousness problem and trying to emerge, I can’t help but feel like it’s not very helpful.’
Her co-host Ben interjected: ‘Because having people and faces he knows is hugely important.’
Kate agreed: ‘I feel that it is and so that’s very tough and, of course, there’s no end in sight. That’s a really tough thing…
‘There’s no one to blame, there’s no one to be angry with, it’s the situation we’re all in.’
Dr Hilary weighed in: ‘It’s really tough, normally you’d want somebody in that condition you’d want to be there by their side to try and encourage them to try to come out of that semi-conscious state and you can’t do that at the moment and that must be heartbreaking.’
Kate, 53, was welcomed back to the studio after taking a couple of weeks off work.
Explaining her absence, the presenter said: ‘I’ve taken some time off, I hadn’t been very well. I think it was a case of the chicken’s came home to roost.
‘Had a lot of sleep, a bit of medicine and feeling very better now.’
She then quipped to Ben about her time off: ‘It’s a gift to everyone at Good Morning Britain and to you, sorry I’m back.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
