Brad King (Tom Benedict Knight) has already made his presence felt in Hollyoaks, after rocking up in the eponymous village last week.
The newcomer made quite the impression on Maxine Minniver (Nikki Sanderson), who was evidently attracted to him — that is, until she discovered that he was her new landlord!
However, in spite of this somewhat awkward introduction, sparks do, in fact, fly between the two in tonight’s E4 first-look episode (January 18).
Matters are complicated further, however, as Maxine’s mum Trish (Denise Welch) shows up looking for her fella, and it soon becomes apparent that Brad is the boyfriend in question!
Maxine is naturally horrified to discover she’s shared a kiss with her mum’s beau, but Brad, however, seems to relish in the danger of it all.
‘He’s a ladies man, to say the least,’ actor Tom Benedict Knight told Metro.co.uk, ‘He’s drawn to the fact that Maxine is attractive, but he’s also drawn to her because of the conquest aspect: the fact that she’s the daughter of his longterm love — and what kind of person does that?!’
Brad, evidently!
The landlord is certainly an enigma, that’s for sure, but it’s obvious that he enjoys being manipulative, and doing whatever it takes to ensure he’s in control of the situation.
‘That’s what Brad is all about,’ said Tom. ‘He’s very narcissistic, and he’s very driven — and very keen to get what he wants. Playing a character like that is an actor’s dream really and I’m sure he’s going to cause absolute mayhem in the village — there’s no way that is not going to happen!
‘For me, as an actor, playing Brad is an absolute delight. To play somebody who’s so complicated. I think we all know, or have heard of, or have come into contact with the Brads of this world, and there’s just something about them where they have to cause mayhem.’
Of course, it’s early doors for this storyline, so we’re not quite sure what’s going to happen next. Will Brad get caught, for example? Trish refuses to believe Maxine’s claims that Brad kissed her, so it’s unlikely that his bad boy nature will be exposed just yet.
However, we do know that Maxine’s relationship with her mum is a complicated one, so will Brad perhaps feel guilty about the damage he’s causing? Will he regret cheating on Trish with her daughter?
Tom doesn’t reckon so. He told us: ‘I think there’s a missing piece of Brad’s personality, and character, and it’s probably guilt! So far, we’re looking at the background of the character, there doesn’t seem to be much guilt there. I think that’s probably what makes him capable of doing what he does.
‘I think he is absolutely, completely confident that there is no way that he can be caught or punished. And maybe the thrill of possibly getting caught is an exciting thing for him.’
Brad is certainly going to ruffle a few feathers and put the cat among the pigeons, that’s for sure, and Tom couldn’t be more excited about what the future holds for the character.
‘I’m interested to bring a new type of bad boy!’ He exclaimed. ‘Brad is a bad boy by default. Ultimately, he’s a narcissist and manipulative person, so I think it’s going to be interesting to bring that to the village and see the fireworks!’
