Piers Morgan slams Rita Ora’s second ‘grovelling’ apology for breaking lockdown

Piers Morgan didn’t hold back his feelings on Rita Ora’s second ‘grovelling’ apology for breaking lockdown and branded her a ‘covidiot celebrity’.

The Hot Right Now singer released a statement saying sorry as it was revealed she didn’t quarantine for 14 days following a trip to Egypt, just days after it emerged that she threw a party to celebrate her 30th birthday at a swanky London restaurant, with a group of close friends and family.

Addressing Rita’s rule break on today’s Good Morning Britain, Susanna Reid pointed out: ‘The irony is the new rules say that if you are a high net-worth traveller, actually you don’t need to quarantine when you come back.’

Piers swiftly interjected: ‘Those weren’t the rules when she did it. That’s the point. It’s just about trying to abide by the rules.

‘That’s all you’ve got to do. A few more months, but it’s beyond some of them.’

He then began to read out Rita’s statement while offering his thoughts.

‘While I realise the apologetic words of a pop star might not carry much weight,’ Piers repeated, before adding: ‘You think?

‘Loses a bit of power after the first 27,000 apologies.’

He continued: ‘I do realise that some might seek to follow by my example.’

‘Well, yeah, duh,’ Piers added. ‘You have millions of followers. What you should have said is, “Please don’t behave like me!”‘

Rita’s full statement reads: ‘I recently flew to Egypt to perform at a corporate event for a private company, where my travel party followed protocol and presented negative Covid tests upon entry, as required by Egyptian authorities.

‘Upon my return to Britain, I should have followed government advice and isolated myself for the required period. As you know, I didn’t follow government advice and for that I apologised earlier this week.

‘I apologise again, unreservedly. I would like to add that I have been tested subsequently, including today, and remain negative for Covid-19 and the same is true for all members of my immediate family who form my support bubble.’

Rita also begged others not to follow her lead, imploring fans to follow the guidelines strictly.

‘While I realise the apologetic words of a pop star might not carry much weight, especially one who has broken the rules like I have, I do realise that some might seek to follow my example,’ she continued.

‘My message to them is simple: please don’t. The guilt and shame I’ve carried this week for my mistake aren’t worth it. Instead, continue to listen to the government advice and the voices of the heroes of the NHS and take the required precautions.

‘I will take the criticisms coming my way because I deserve them. For my part, I hope to one day make it up to the public who have given me so much support over the years and, in particular, make it up to the heroes of the NHS.’

‘That is my promise to everyone disappointed in my behaviour. In the meantime, I will be donating my fee from Egypt to charity,’ she concluded.

‘Be better than I have been and learn from my mistakes so you don’t have to learn the hard way yourselves. Love, Rita.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
