Manchester United are considering a shock move for Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier, although the La Liga leaders have no interest in letting him go.
The 30-year-old moved from Tottenham to the Spanish capital in the summer of 2019 and has become an integral part of the side under Diego Simeone.
The former Burnley man has played 90 minutes of all 10 La Liga matches so far this season, with Atletico sitting top of the table after picking up 26 points in that time, he has also started all five Champions League contests.
The Telegraph reports that United have shown an interest in Trippier as they look to provide back-up and competition for first-choice right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The Red Devils also see Trippier as a more attacking option than Wan-Bissaka, offering a goal and assist threat that the 23-year-old struggles to.
Trippier has provided four La Liga assists already this season, the second most for Atletico this campaign.
The England man, who memorably scored the opening goal in the 2018 World Cup semi-final against Croatia, is under contract until 2022 and Atletico are unlikely to let him go before that.
It would also seem extremely unlikely that he would want to return to the Premier League to play second fiddle to Wan-Bissaka when he is the first-choice right-back at the La Liga leaders.
The report from the Telegraph suggests United may make a move in the summer, when Trippier has just one year left on his contract, so much could have changed by then, but under the current circumstances, it does not appear to be a move that neither player nor selling club would be interested in,
Atletico Madrid are currently one point clear at the top of La Liga, but with two games in hand over their closest rivals, Real Sociedad.
Diego Simeone’s side are yet to lose this season, with eight wins and two draws from 10 matches, conceding just two goals.
They face a huge week ahead, with a trip to Salzburg in the Champions League on Wednesday, where they need a point to progress to the knockout stages, then a clash with Real Madrid in La Liga on Saturday, when they can really cement their status as title favourites with a victory.
