Coronation Street boss reveals cast had to isolate before huge stunt

A huge milestone such as Coronation Street’s 60th anniversary simply wouldn’t be complete without a stunt.

However, pulling off a stunt in the middle of a pandemic seems like an impossibility — especially with a two-metre distance employed between actors.

John Wiston — Head of Continuing Drama and ITV in the North — confirmed that planes for the serial drama’s huge anniversary did, in fact, have to be altered due to Covid-19, but ‘a little bit of the spectacular’ is still there, nonetheless.

‘What we have done is concentrate on the stories we have running at the moment and peak them during the week,’ John said. ‘We will have a good whodunit and a great chapter in a particular story.

‘And we will have a community story where our community has to rally together to save the street. That has been done before. I’ve seen Ken sitting down on the cobbles in past episodes. But this is a more Manctopia-type threat to the street which feels more modern. Rising to the challenge of that.’

John also revealed that — for the anniversary week — the soap employed the use of the ‘close contact cohort’ for particular actors, who were then allowed to move within the mandatory two-metres.

“There will be a stunt for the 60th anniversary and a little bit of the spectacular still there. We are going to do ‘close contact cohort’ for the first time. Which basically requires two or three of the actors to be tested every two or three days and for them to isolate only with themselves.

‘And the stunt crews to do the same. So they can be within two metres of each other for this particular stunt.

‘It’s a balance of two safeties. The stunt people have to be there to make sure our actors are safe.  And that is really important.

‘As is people not spreading the virus. So it’s a combination of using this testing regime and a bit of isolation to allow us to film this stunt in that way. It is new territory for us.’
