Three decades ago, Survivor Series featured one of WWE’s biggest debut – and The Undertaker.
The Gobbledy Gooker has gone down in pro wrestling infamy after weeks of hype about the contents of a mysterious giant egg which was set to hatch at around Thanksgiving.
The giant turkey – with legend Hector Guerrero in the costume – has gone down in WWE folklore as one of the company’s biggest missteps.
However, with tonight’s show celebrating 30 years since The Undertaker appeared on the same night, the promotion gave a hilarious nod to its past as the Gobbledy Gooker make a big comeback.
As if that wasn’t enough, the big bird won its first ever title in the company by rolling up 24/7 Champion R-Truth – who introduced his feathery foe during a great segment on the Kickoff Show, where he thought the celebrations were for the hatchling.
In a way, the comic relief moment was still a nod to the Dead Man, who has admitted in the past he was worried he was going to be revealed as the man under the outfit.
‘So about the time I got my phone call, they were doing this promotion where, on the show – back then they’d do three or four weeks in a row – they had this gigantic egg on the set,’ he told “Stone Cold” Steve Austin on The Broken Skull Sessions.
‘So this egg appears on the show, right? And all of a sudden my mind just starts going like, “Aw, man, they’re going to bring me in” – now this is how outlandish the gimmicks were back then too – “I’m going to be Egg Man.”
‘I had convinced myself, to the point where my stomach hurt, that I’m going to be “Egg Man.” ‘
Oh, how different the wrestling world could have been – but at least Gooker finally got his moment in the sun, even if it could all change again by the end of the night.
