Roman Reigns and Jey Uso continue to be the best story being told in all of WWE after last night’s SmackDown.
The Universal Champion and his real life cousin added more depth to their rivalry-turned-partnership this week, with the Tribal Chief asserting his dominance within their hierarchy.
It all started when Jey had a backstage interview with Kayla Braxton and insisted last week’s attack on Daniel Bryan came down to them not being blood, so he did what he had to do.
However, Paul Heyman insisted Reigns didn’t authorise the interview, later leading to Roman angrily blasted Uso for taking on the interview, and set up a match with Kevin Owens (following an earlier exchange) for the main event.
The two delivered a strong match, with Jey showing a much more aggressive side to match KO’s energy.
Heyman made his way to ringside to get a closer look, and seemed stressed as Owens started to mount a comeback.
That’s when Roman’s music hit, distracting KO and allowing Jey to hit a low headbutt, a superkick and a splash to pick up a big singles win.
As Uso left up the ramp, Roman came out and placed a hand on his shoulder to show his approval, then raised his title above his own head to end the show.
Best of the rest
The night kicked off with Sasha Banks facing off Bayley in her first SmackDown Women’s Title defence since winning at Hell In A Cell last month.
She overcame her former BFF in a fantastic match – would you expect anything else – which ended as the Role Model tapped to the Bank Statement.
It looks like WWE are waiting a bit longer for the next chapter of their rivalry though, as Carmella cut Sasha’s celebration short and hit the champ with a superkick and X-Factor to leave her lying on the ramp.
Later, Rey Mysterio was seen trying to find his daughter Aalya while Dominik urged him to focus on King Corbin, before the latter attacked backstage before their Survivor Series qualifier.
What could have been a glorious match was hampered by a focus on the Mysterio family saga, with Seth Rollins distracting to help, and even taking out Dominik at ringside.
Aalyah and Murphy would appear, again meaning Rey’s head was turned, which let Corbin hit the End of Days to book his place on the Survivor Series team.
Later in the night, Otis faced Rollins in a decent bout, but again the Mysterio/Seth/Murphy storyline dominated as the latter helped the SmackDown Saviour win his own qualifier.
Backstage, Rollins approached his Disciple, who confirmed he has come home to his leader as Seth welcomed him back with open arms.
Aalyah wasn’t happy with this development, but Murphy said she needed to trust him, and insisted this was all for the greater good – which she seemed receptive of.
Elsewhere, Billie Kay tried to hand her resume to the Street Profits without much luck, and Ruby Riott won a fun sprint of a Triple Threat Match against Natalya and Zelina Vega to nab a spot on the Survivor Series team.
Oh, and Lars Sullivan sat down with Michael Cole for another interview, this time about his journey from being bullied to becoming a bully himself.
