The day PlayStation fans have been waiting for is finally here, as the PS5 is released in the UK.

The long-anticipated console is already out in certain regions, including the US and Australia – but we’ve had to hold on for an extra week on this side of the world, although given the chaos around pre-orders actually getting hold of one might be even more difficult than many expected.

The PS5 comes to the market complete with a bunch of new first party games – costing up to £70 in some cases – but just what time can you expect it to arrive on these shores, and can you use your old PS4 stock with it?

Here’s what you need to know…

What time is the PS5 released in the UK?

There’s no set time for the PS5 to be released in the UK today – if you’ve pre-ordered one you’ll get it whenever it happens to be delivered.

If you haven’t already ordered a PS5 then getting hold of one online on launch day may still be possible but stock is likely to be severely limited.

Fortunately, a number of retailers are likely to have new stock available on launch day, including:

Can you use PS4 games or PS4 controllers on the PS5?

The good news on this front is that Sony has confirmed that most PS4 games will be playable on the PS5.

This means that you’ll be able to download games that you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store on PS4 and play them on your brand new PS5.

The company has said around 99% of their PS4 games will be playable on the new console – and you can insert PS4 discs into the PS5 to play them, although you won’t be able to use physical media on the PS5 Digital Edition as it doesn’t have a disc drive.

Sony said: ‘We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. ‘

We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers.’

They have also confirmed that you’ll be able to use your PS4 controller to play games on the PS5 – but you’ll only be able to use the PS4 DualShock 4 controller to play PS4 games – rather than any PS5 specific games.
