Snoop Dogg couldn’t resist poking fun at Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr as the two veterans returned to the boxing ring to draw at Los Angeles’ Staples Center.
Eyebrows were raised when it was announced Tyson, 54, would be strapping up his gloves again for the first time in 15 years to take on 51-year-old Jones Jr but it was an engaging battle bewteen the two Americans.
Tyson surpassed expectations with an energetic and bruising display and many felt the iconic former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world should have been awarded the victory.
But the unofficial panel of judges, watching the bout remotely, could not separate the two legends after their eight two-minute rounds and scored the fight a draw.
There was, at times, a bizarre feel to last night’s spectacle, with YouTube sensation Jake Paul facing NBA star Nate Robinson on the undercard in California.
Hip hop legend Snoop Dogg was on commentary duties for that bout and threatened to steal the show with some brilliant lines from ringside.
‘He’ll be alright, he’s from the hood. Nate’s gonna shake that off,’ the rapper said as Robinson lay motionless on the canvas following Paul’s brutal stoppage in the second round.
The 49-year-old then shared his thoughts during the main event shortly after performing a medley of his classics.
And many declared Snoop Dogg the true winner of the night as he likened Tyson’s fight with Jones Jr to two of his uncles having it out at a family get together.
‘This sh*t like two of my uncles fighting at the BBQ – “Get your uncle outta there, get him out!”‘ he joked as the pair exchanged blows in the opening round.
‘”Meet me in the back, I’m tired of this sh*t, come on!”
‘Get up in there, Roy! Sh*t, in and out!’
Reacting to the fight being scored a draw, Tyson said: ‘I’m good with that.
‘I’m good with a draw, because I entertained the crowd, the crowed was happy with it.
I’m used to doing it for three minutes, sometimes like two minutes or three minutes. I hope to go further, absolutely, and he can be on the card as well.
‘I was very happy to be here, despite what everyone says I was happy to go to eight rounds.
‘Nobody thought I could go eight rounds, but you’ve got to go the distance, that’s boxing.’
Jones Jr admitted he would have to talk to his family about a potential return after feeling the force of Tyson’s punching power inside the ring.
‘We’ve got to do this again, everybody loves Mike, I love Mike too but it’s something else taking punches from Mike, he said.
‘I’ll go talk to my family, see how they feel about it and if they want to do it again, we’ll do it again.’
