The Great British Bake Off is edging ever closer to crowning its winner for 2020, with the tent of dreams revealing its semi-finalists on Tuesday night.

The latest episode of the much-loved Channel 4 show saw Bake Off’s remaining contestants go head-to-head in the dessert week quarter finals where they were required to first bake a cheesecake, then take on a Sussex pond pudding technical challenge which left judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith a little underwhelmed.

To use Prue’s words they ‘made a complete mess of it’, but luckily they had the show-stopper challenge – a jelly art design cake – to get back into the judges’ good books.

Despite pulling it out of the bag with their creations all round, one baker had to be given the boot, with Marc being sent home by Prue and Paul ahead of the semi-final.

That leaves just four bakers fighting it out, with Paul revealing: ‘We’ve got four fantastic bakers and I still can’t call who’s going to be in the final.’

So who’s made it through to the semi-finals and will be back to get their bake on in the tent of dreams, you ask?

Hermine

Hermine had a cracking quarter-finals week and landed star baker, after impressing the judges with her show-stopper design.

She came third in the technical, with Prue telling the 39-year-old accountant that her ‘flavours were good’, before praising her show-stopper as ‘a real triumph’.

‘Her second star baker in a row,’ Prue said. ‘She is an amazing baker, in the past she’s done really well because she kept it quite safe.’

After faring well with his cheesecake signature, Dave found himself falling last in the quarter-final technical challenge, with Paul telling the armoured guard, 30, that his Sussex Pond pudding was ‘very under-steamed’.

He did, however, impress with his jelly cake – securing his spot in the semi-final – as Prue commended how ‘neat’ his bake was, while Paul told Dave: ‘Your jelly is fantastic it melts in the mouth, but your downfall is the bit underneath, it’s too stodgy.’

Laura, Great British Bake Off 2020

Laura

Laura, 31, had a strong quarter-final, not only winning the technical challenge, but wowing with her show-stopper as Prue told her she got ‘every single texture and flavour spot on’.

Asked how it feels to be in the semi-final, Laura, a digital manager when she’s not baking up a storm, said: ‘It doesn’t feel real.’

Peter, Great British Bake Off 2020

Peter

Peter didn’t exactly have the best quarter-final week, after landing fourth in the technical and his show-stopper being a little lacklustre when it came to winning praise from Prue and Paul.

But, his efforts were enough for him to squeeze past Marc into the semi-final and Peter seemed pretty chuffed to have made it through.

‘I’m through to the semi-final, I’ll take that,’ he said.

Hermine, Dave, Peter and Laura will be back to battle it out on Bake Off during Tuesday night’s semi-final, where three bakers will then be sent through to this year’s grand final.

The Great British Bake Off continues Tuesday night at 8pm on Channel 4.
