Celeste is quite rightly ‘honoured’ to be the first singer to have penned an original track for the John Lewis Christmas advert which finally arrived today.
The 26-year-old’s captivating vocals are draped across the department store’s latest commercial with her own self-penned single Give A Little Love, the message driving this year’s campaign which hopes to raise £4million for charities Fare-share and Homestart.
Cackling hairdressers with beaming smiles, a nurse on her way to save lives and the everyday heroes who have been getting the nation through the most testing of times are honoured in the two-minute trailer, illustrating that no matter how big or small every act of kindness goes a long way.
Speaking about her involvement in one of the most anticipated moments of the year, Celeste said: ‘Every year when the John Lewis and Waitrose Christmas advert comes out it’s always this big moment, everyone is like waiting to see what it is going to look like and wants to know who’s singing the song.
‘Yeh, I just felt really honoured immediately.’
‘The message that everyone really wanted to get across was just the idea of like, if you’re kind and giving with these little acts then hopefully it can ricochet and just make the world a better place,’ she explained.
‘Initially we wrote the song over Zoom, then we have come here to the Church studio to record it properly.
‘I just wanted to create something that felt classic and felt true to who I am as a songwriter and a performer.’
Celeste follows the likes of Sir Elton John, Ellie Goulding and Lily Allen to lend her vocals to a John Lewis advert, which has traditionally been a spot offered to music’s elite.
Customer Director for John Lewis Claire told Metro.co.uk what made Celeste the perfect candidate for the advert.
‘We were looking at a few different songs but Adam and Eve advertising company brought her to us and said, “Listen to this sound and listen to the music.”
‘She was singing some original songs and we thought her voice is so haunting but so magical and also modern.
‘We really wanted to go with something modern for our brand and they asked her to write something and she wrote this.
‘It’s all connected to Give A Little Love so this all worked out pretty well.’
Breaking from its past of flogging gimmicks like an uncontrollable fire-breathing dragon or Sir Elton John’s back catalogue, this year’s John Lewis
campaign launches on National Kindness Day with a target to support two UK based charities: Fare-Share, which helps those facing food poverty and Home-Start, which works with parents who need support.
While every donation is welcomed, ultimately just sending a little love is enough to make someone’s Christmas.
The John Lewis Christmas advert will make its televised debut during The Voice final on Sunday. Celeste’s single Give A Little Love is available to stream and download now.
