John Lewis Christmas Advert 2020: Gone are the gimmicks for an poignant festive message alongside the haunting vocals of Celeste

The John Lewis Christmas advert for 2020, easily the most anticipated in the store’s history of festive offerings, has landed, serving as a magical tribute to all of us during the global pandemic and driven by one fitting message: if you can give anything this year, give a little love.

Playing over the haunting tones of Brit Award winner Celeste’s original piece penned especially for the campaign, the John Lewis advert begins with a young boy whose ball is stuck up a tree until a girl, equipped with a heart-shaped umbrella, lends a helping hand before Britain is transformed into an animated dreamland.

Cackling hairdressers with beaming smiles, a nurse on her way to save lives, pigeons giving a hedgehog a hip hop makeover, and the everyday heroes who have been getting the nation through the most testing of times are honoured in the two-minute trailer, illustrating that no matter how big or small every act of kindness goes a long way.

Breaking from tradition of flogging gimmicks like an uncontrollable fire-breathing dragon or Sir Elton John’s back catalogue, this year’s campaign launches on National Kindness Day with a target to raise £4million for two UK based charities: FareShare, which helps those facing food poverty and Home-Start, which works with parents who need support.

While every donation is welcomed, ultimately just sending a little love is enough to make someone’s Christmas.

Celeste is a Brit Award-winning singer who won the BBC Sound of 2020, and while she’s yet to release her debut album, she is already one of the most exciting acts in the UK.

The 26-year-old also wrote this year’s song, Give A Little Love, the first time the chain has opted to use an original track for its campaign.

Celeste said she was ‘honoured’ to have been picked to follow the likes of Sir Elton John, Ellie Goulding and Lily Allen for the commercial.

She enthused: ‘Every year when the John Lewis and Waitrose Christmas advert comes out it’s always this big moment, everyone is like waiting to see what it is going to look like and wants to know who’s singing the song. Yeh, I just felt really honoured immediately.’

Give A Little Love will be available to stream and download with proceeds going to Fare-share and Homestart.

Pippa Wicks, Executive Director of  John Lewis, said: ‘We recently set out  our ambition for our business to be a force for good – so we decided that this year was the year to break the mould and do something different.

‘We have a long tradition of helping support the communities which we serve, so as we launch one of the best loved assets, our Christmas ad, it’s fitting to take this one step further by working hand in hand with two incredible charities supporting families in need.

‘We were humbled by the kindness shown by the British public during the pandemic. We want this campaign to be uplifting and to inspire everyone to give some kindness in their own way this Christmas, especially to those who need it most.

‘The pandemic has proved that it’s our small acts of love and kindness, particularly in challenging times, that captures what it is to be human; and when one small act of kindness multiplies it can have a lasting impact.’

The John Lewis advert will see its televised debut during The Voice final from 7pm on ITV.
